| Who Needs a
Gameboy?? --
Primis
3-31-00,
4:15AM |
| I've been seriously considering acquiring a Gameboy
lately for "mobile entertainment". Then I said "nah" and decided to check
out Games for TI (Texas Instruments) calculators.
Oh my.
Now I've found myself digging out my TI-83. TI games have come
a long way since I first saw them. Where before text and ASCII
games were all there was, now there are ports of The Legend of Zelda,
Quake, DOOM, NBA Live '98, and more floating around.
That almost scares me. I've even seen a sound module a guy added
so he could have Sound FX for his games.
And it's not just games -- someone even coded a Windows Desktop for
TI-82/83's. Eeek. Suddenly I don't want a Gameboy and instead am wondering
if I'm competent enough to make my own transfer cable for it. :-p
For more info on this sick-and-disturbing-yet-wonderful scene, visit the
following:
Ian's TI-82/83 Website
has some great info on just what the TI's are capable as well as some fantastic
links.
Phil's ULTIMATE TI-82/83
Game Page has a ton of games available. |

| Just in case you haven't been glued to the radio lately,
Metallica is back with a new original single off the Mission
Impossible 2 soundtrack entitled "I Disappear". And from the sounds of
the track, Metallica is ready to do anything but disappear.
Not counting "No Leaf Clover" and "Minus Human" off their S&M
collaboration album with the San Fransisco Symphony Orchestra,
"I Disappear" is the first true original Metallica we've heard in quite a
while (the album before S&M was, you guessed it, Garage Inc.
which featured covers -- lots and lots of covers...).
If "I Disappear" is a sign of things to come, James Hetfield and the boys
are indeed going to lean towards a harder edgier sound than they did on
Load and the slightly disappointing Reload. In fact,
one can't listen to "I Disappear" and think of some of Alice In Chains'
harder tracks from their early days (Lars Ulrich and Jerry Cantrell are
buddies -- coincidence?). Metallica also seems to have rediscovered
the low D and E-flat chords, which guitar aficionados will know is a very,
very good sign indeed...
Hetfield's vocal chops also seem back up to snuff. Whereas offerings
off of Load and Reload could get downright surreal when it
came to the lyrics, a trend has been noticed of leaning back towards more
straight-forward storytelling or point-making.
Those expecting a return to something like the fare off Ride the
Lightning or Master of Puppets had better not hold your breath
-- Metallica has evolved and so has all other music since that time, so the
demand isn't there for it anymore. However, a return to the style off
the Black album or even ...And Justice For All might not
be too farfetched.
One thing is for sure though, Metallica is back in the studio recording originals
and by all indications, the masters of metal are back in all their songwriting
glory. Now that's something to get excited about... |
| Gene Eugene... (1961-

| Gene Eugene, one of the many unheralded creative
musical geniuses of our time, passed away on 3-20-2000.
Gene Eugene was not only the glue for Adam Again, The Lost Dogs, the Swirling
Eddies, and other groups, but he also produced, mixed, engineered records
for a bunch of other bands such as Plankeye, Mortal, DigHayZoose, Precious
Death, Tourniquet, The Choir, the 77's, LSU, Jacob's Trouble, the Waiting,
Poor Old Lu, Deliverance, the Insyderz, Blackball, and so many more I
couldn't begin to list them all.
The list reads
like a Who's Who and looks eerily similar to my personal CD collection.
Tooth & Nail Records' website
currently has a nice tribute on their front page, and a
comprehensive listing
of Gene Eugene's accomplishments (which also include live- and voice-acting)
can be found here.
Many thanks to Red-River for notifying me of the unfortunate news. |

| As proof that we don't screw around here, I'm pleased
to announce the launch of a new page called The Latest.
The Latest will give you a quick rundown of the latest
news headlines, sports scores, weather, and more -- all at your fingertips.
Pretty scary? You bet. Now you never have to leave the
site, ever! *evil laugh*
Seriously though, the page is fairly intense as far as Java applets go and
will take a while to download, so you've been warned. It's worth it though
It's all a part of the ever-ongoing process to bring you the reader
more of what you want, and less of what you don't want. If it doesn't
trip your trigger, that's cool -- just remember it's there if you need it,
all conveniently located on one page. ;-)
Because hey, Prìomh.com isn't about money or awards or hits
-- it's about finding the best and coolest info, and something you the reader
can even be proud of (hopefully). Feel free to give
Feedback. |

| From the AP comes a story of "creative sentencing".
The 18-year-old Troy, MI man who had been cited for playing rap
music too loud on his car stereo surely raised his eyebrows when he found
out his sentence.
District Judge Michael Martone decided to waive the jail time and fines typically
associated with the violation and instead sentenced the 18-year-old to two
straight hours of hard.time listening to Wayne Newton's Greatist Hits collection.
Talk about scared straight. No word yet on if the ACLU will take action
for the inhumane sentencing. |

| Quotes are cool. Especially quotes by Twain and
Churchill, and the like. But quotes in general are cool. Recently
I found myself needing a quotes source again, and so I dug up an old program
I snagged a long time ago in a realm far far away off a dialup BBS. And
nice guy that I am I'll share it with you, hosted from this very site.
Quote for the Day is a nice little program that includes
features such as searchable quotes, and random quotes, as well as the option
of editing the database it pulls its quotes from. I've used the thing
for years while I was in high school, college, and even now when I have no
real use for it. Quote for the Day runs under Win 3.1
and Win95/98 operating systems, and is a mere 57K download.
It is in ZIP format and you will need an app like WinZip
or PKUnzip to decompress it and use it. Trust me, it's nifty. |

| Well one of my friends did it to me again. I
find myself embroiled once again in a game of
VGA Planets, and find myself also
yearning for the time of simpler-yet-deeper games such as it. There's
nothing like a turn-based, play-by-email game that takes months to play to
cleanse the soul. Or the galaxy, depending on how evil you are.
If you're a person who recalls the days of BBS Door Games and finds yourself
wishing for something similar, do yourself a favor and download
VGA Planets, start up a game, and
enjoy. If you already have it -- well why aren't you playing it right now?!

| The Annual NCAA Picks -- Revisted.
--
Primis
3-20-00,
3:45PM |
| I once again raised a lot of eyebrows when I made my
picks -- and I raised even more when people watched them become true before
their very eyes. Lets start in the West.
Call it a gut feeling, but I knew Gonzaga was going to be trouble.
To be fair so did most everyone else. But the pick that raised
the most eyebrows was putting Wisconsin in the Sweet 16. And
sure enough there they are after upsetting the #1 Seed Arizona Wildcats in
the 2nd Round. Suddenly all those people whining about how the Big
10 conference wasn't that tough this year are shutting up.
In the Midwest not a whole heck of a lot happened. Which was
expected, since it's a loaded region. The teams that should be in
the Sweet 16 are, including Iowa St. who I thought would falter against
Auburn (doh). And as expected, Michigan St. is having its way
with teams.
In the South, the first round fell precisely as it should (no upsets). Then
the second round came around an screwed everyone up, including Tennesse
downing UConn and Stanford falling to North Carolina . Ah well.
And finally in the East the one that had everyone talking was Pepperdine
upsetting, no downright thumping, Indiana (and look at who blatantly
called it) in the first round. They also put forth a valiant effort
again Oklahoma St. but fell short. And finally, Seton Hall knocked out
Temple, which was another bracket-buster.
To review: In the East I'm hurting after only getting Duke correctly
into the Sweet 16. In the South I got shut out totally from
the Sweet 16, despite the fact I nailed a lot of 1st round picks right
on the money. In the Midwest, Iowa St. dumping Auburn was my only
misstep. And in the West, I got 2 out of the 4 right, including
Wisconsin who was the big surprise.
Overall not a bad year for my picks, but I've had way better. The good
news is, 3 of my Final Four teams are still alive, while some other
people I know had all their Final Four picks eliminated. A successful
pick of the first couple rounds in my estimation, considering how full of
upsets the second round proved to be. I'll be back next year though, and
dead-on-accurate, I vow it... |

Several teams lucked out, and several got the shaft. But it's
all part of the fun of it all.
So while other sites and "experts" are still bickering over who should and
shouldn't have made the field of 64, you'll get the predictions on what to
expect here first, from a source with a reliable track record when it comes
to predicting the craziness of the early rounds.

| ...Because March Madness is in effect. I should
know, my life has been all but ruined by it in the last week. Between
high school basketball districts and NCAA Div. I Championship Week....
eek... (well worth the personal sacrafice though)...
The Men's field of 64 for the NCAA Div. I tourney will be announced Sunnday
night. By Monday you can expect my annual complete breakdown of
the brackets, and what to expect (remember me? I'm the guy whose
record for picking upsets, like putting Valparaiso into the Sweet 16, is
nearly perfect?). Sure I don't get too many teams into the Final
Four, but my record for picking the first 2 rounds is darn near perfect over
the last three years.
With Cincinnati's Kenyon Martin out for the season with a broken leg, the
tourney seeding has been thrown for a loop... but it's just all part of March
Madness
In the meantime, if you're like me and can't wait for the brackets to come
out, go over to
this URL at
ESPN.COM and print off a blank bracket like I have already, and fill
it in as the field of 64 is revealed on Sunday. Pathetic yes... but
it only comes once a year!

| Approaching the NHL Trade Deadline.
--

3-6-00,

| With Ray Bourque now traded to the Avalanche, the
floodgates have been opened as we approach the NHL Trade Deadline.
Petr Svoboda, Doug Gilmour, and Mark Messier are
all rumored to be moving next. And on the Montreal Canadiens
everyone looks like trade bait.
The New Jersey Devils want Messier badly, now that they know
they can't get Bourque. However, Messier's Canucks aren't out of the
playoff race yet and he may not be willing to abandon them... Toronto,
the Devils, and the Buffalo Sabres are amongst teams interested.
Doug Gilmour is major trade bait for the awful Chicago
Blackhawks, and would fit well on most teams. Might Gilmour head
back to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was a hero for so many seasons?
Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Petr Svoboda has several teams
interested, inluding Detroit and Philadelphia, and as bad as
the Lightning are they wouldn't mind dumping his salary. However, with
Bourque traded, is he a viable alternative for them? Not really.
Look for St. Louis to make a big push for him.
The Montreal Canadiens are a fire sale waiting to happen except for
one rub -- they've actually played well recently after an awful start.
G Jeff Hackett, along with forward Shayne Corson and
a cast of others, are all coveted by various teams. |
| Ray Bourque's Future.
--
Primis
3-6-00, 5:15PM |
| He's spent 21 years wearing the Bruins sweater, many
of them wearing the "C". He's been on some good teams, and some really
really bad ones. He's put with morons in his own team's upper-management,
and criticism from fans. And he's never said on negative word about
it, and instead just went out and did his job every night as captain of the
Boston Bruins.
And now, with the Bruins going nowhere, Ray Bourque might be heading out
of Boston and to a Stanley Cup contender.
Bourque was informed today to not suit up for tonight's game, which in the
NHL can only mean that a trade is nearly completed. The two front-runners
appear to be Philadelphia and Detroit, with a couple teams still having an
outside shot.
Odds are Bourque only has one or two season left. Whether it's Philly or
Detroit, or wherever, it will almost certainly be a team with a serious chance
at the Stanley Cup. And if anyone deserves that last shot at Stanley,
it's a class act like Bourque. You're earned it, Ray.
(UPDATE 9:05pm) - Philadelphia is out of the running for Bourque according
to ESPN.COM. Detroit heads the list of
those still be considered, along with Colorado, St. Louis, and Dallas.
(UPDATE 9:45pm) - Ray Bourque has officially been traded, along Dave
Andreycuk, from the Boston Bruins to the Colorado Avalanche for Brian
Rolston, 2 young prospects, and at least one high draft pick. The
acquisition of Bourque strengthens the Avs, but including Andreychuk in the
deal raised a few eyebrows and a couple questions from several corners of
the league (and the news is only mere minutes old), as well as a few rumors
that Colorado really wasn't where Bourque wanted to go. At any rate
-- we'll see the results soon enough. |
