More Roughnecks DVD's Confirmed.   -- Primis     7-27-01,  10:25PM
www.roughneckchronicles.com broke the news today that Sony has apparently been moved enough by Pluto and Tesca Nemarosa campaign sales to commit to producing DVD's for the Hydora and Tophet campaigns.  That's excellent news, since these are the campaigns where the show started to take a much more serious and darker tone, and consequently began to have a lot more-memorable and better episodes.  Episodes like "Sole Survivor" and "Of Flesh and Steel" were the ones that really made their first mark on me, and aside from the final episodes, the Tophet campaign is perhaps the most intense of them all.

For those of you scoring at home, that leaves the final 3 campaigns that aren't produced or committed to yet (as well as the final 3 friggin' episodes that have never been released/produced, but let's not go there right now).

Mmmmmm... Super Smash....   -- Primis     7-13-01,  12:45PM
Gamespot has an article and screenshots on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Melee game for its GameCube.  If it's anything like the first, there's a chance it could support the GameCube sales all by itself (like Goldeneye did for the N64).  The original Super Smash Bros. was one of the biggest Out-of-Nowhere surprise games I've ever seen.  I can remember renting it with some friends figuring it would suck, and 9 hours of play later the game was bought, and the next two months were nothing but playing that dang game until it was all instinctual.  ;-)  I've never played a game that resulted in so many howls of protest, so many shrieks and exclamations of surprise and grief, and so many "booyah's"!!!  All I know is Link better be in this next incarnation...

REVIEW: Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within   -- Primis     7-13-01,  11:50AM
There's really not much to say here.  This is the best movie of the summer.  The CG is at times so realistic you forget you're not watching a live-action flick, the plot is better than I expected, and no other movie this summer is realistically going to touch it.

The only thing I had trouble with was the choice of Alec Baldwin to voice the lead male role, Gray.  While all the other characters' on-screen counterparts seemed to fit their voices, Baldwin's did not, and it seemed fairly out of place at times (I'm not much of an Alec Baldwin fan).  But that's really a minor issue considering how horribly-wrong the voice-casting could have gone.  For instance, I liked the casting of James Woods' character after being fairly suspicious of it as the movie started rolling along...

You don't need to know anything about the Final Fantasy games to follow the movie.  In fact, the movie is its own universe.  There are some nods to Final Fantasy VIII here or there (nope sorry, no sword-guns though), but overall it stands on its own.  And yet... underlying it somehow does have a very, very Final Fantasy feel to it the whole way through (especially at the ending).

This is honestly one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen in a long time.  There are some things in this movie that just ooze "cool", and it's absolutely mind-bending to see how far we've come with CG.  I fully expect a sequel, and will be disappointed if there isn't one.

Excellent job, Square...

Coach a Dynasty   -- Primis     7-11-01,  3:15PM
OK, so I'm a pretty hardcore sports fan.   I love sports sims, and sports management.  I've simulated entire Front Page Sports: Football fantasy football seasons before all in a row, trying to build a team from scratch and get it to the championship.  I lvoe signing free agents, making trades, and developing players.   Graphics aren't as important as realism and fun in this realm.

Coaching a Dynasty puts you at the helm of a college basketball program.  Develop, recruit, and gun for the National Championship.  It's all text-based but the depth is excellent and the recruiting options alone make this game well worth the time.  If you like hardcore sports management sims, give this a looksee.

Your Very Own Hero...   -- Primis     7-11-01,  2:50PM
Beware -- this is a black hole for time.   HeroMachine is just entirely too much fun.  Create your own representation of whatever RolePlaying character or SuperHero you may have kicking aroudn in your head.  Even more fun yet is to make "realistic" representations of yourself in all your many moods and displaying your many skillz:

Don't Mess With Him...

Fear me!   Fear my wrath!   Fear my magic staff, and my complete lack of fashion sense while somehow still managing to scream "suave" !!!!

Tesca Campaign Available for Preorder   -- Primis     7-11-01,  2:40PM
Amazon.com currently has the DVD of the Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles Tesca Nemarosa campaign available for preorder.  The Tesca campaign is one of the darker ones of the show.   Tesca Nemarosa is a jungle-type of planet and is where SICON first realizes just what exactly the Bugs are doing to build up their army -- and how.  All this while dealing with prejudice, loss, and fallen comrades within the squad.

Yeah I know, it's not *exactly* what I'd hoped for.  They're not releasing them in order (Hydora should be next, and besides I reeeaaalllllyyy  want "Sole Survivor" on DVD anyways), but it's better than the alternative, which is that we get none of them or only part of them on DVD.

The Tesca Campaign has a release date of Sept. 18th, 2001.

Who knows.  Maybe there's still a shot at getting the unmade Final Campaign episodes done...
