The Reality Behind the Myth?   -- Primis                 4-24-00,   11:35PM
We've all heard or read the story of Sgt. JATO by now I'm sure, not to mention all the people debunking the darn thing.  However, this site simply entitled Rocket Car was written by a man claiming to be the inspiration for the myth.

Personally I don't care whether any of it's true or not -- it's an incredibly-entertaining hour's worth of reading and well-written.  So go and be enlightened or... something...

Oh Dear...   -- Primis                 4-14-00,   11:15PM
For those out there who just refuse to take part in anything that is the slightest bit sane or useful, there's always great time-wasting websites.  However one takes the cake.

Furious George and the Cross-Country Crime Spree is, in a word, cool.  Beyond cool in fact, because it also gets bonus point for incorporating/satirizing Curious George (fans of the now-defunct "3rd Rik" will understand the connection and fascination).

If you go there, make sure you have plenty of time to waste because you will be fascinated, engrossed in, and obsessed by this site.  It's just all good, clean, deranged fun.

Modern Technology + Ancient Wisdom.   -- Primis    4-8-00,   3:25PM
"The art of war is of vital importance to the state."

So claimed Sun Tzu in his legendary work The Art of War, a must-read for anyone who is planning for  eventual galactic conquest like me.

Why is this work, written over 2400 years ago, a must-read for anyone interested in military tactics and theory?  Because Sun Tzu's thoughts on the subject of war were fashioned in such a specific-yet-general manner that they can be applied to nearly anything -- whether you're the latest German leader invading France, planning on conquering the galaxy one system at a time, or just take a game of traditional Capture-the-Flag entirely too seriously.

Thanks to modern technology, and Ron Copeland's efforts, The Art of War is available to one and all in the form of a Windows Help file.  So not only can you read Sun Tzu's genius, but you can also take advantage of hyperlinked text in case you're not familiar with certain terms or concepts.  It's very cool.

The file is zipped and will require WinZip or a program similar to decompress it, and is about 230K in size.  So go ahead and indulge your more Machiavellian side...

"A WINNER IS YOU!...".   -- Primis                 4-7-00,   1:35PM
One of my colleagues SychoSyd (it'll take a federal indictment to get me to admit he's a friend) has always said the best part about the end-credits to video games is playing Spot the American(s)<TM>.  You remember the NES days -- when Japanese-to-English translations were laughable... oh wait, that's still today isn't it?... Yeah game translations are as pitiful now as they ever were.  So if you have a spare 15 minutes (or an hour if you're a slow reader) hop on over to Zany Video Game Quotes where you can relive some of the funniest and most bizzare quotes pulled from video games.  Some are poor translations (the now-infamous "A winner is you!" for example), some are just funny, and some are just disturbing and deranged.  It even has screenshots of selected offenders.

Something To Chew On.   -- Primis                 4-7-00,   12:55PM
I almost regret posting this now since the thing's been up for quite a while, but Zibblsnrt has an excellent essay (up on his site) entitled Ne Obliviscaris that I think everyone should take a look at.  Though I don't necessarily agree with his assertion that we're maybe another 10 years from a major big-time war, the larger scope of the essay is a sobering reminder of what morons we, as humans, are and can be.

Like It or Not... Cope....   -- Primis                 4-7-00,   11:15AM
This news bulletin just in.  Attention all Dallas Stars fans:  Brett Hull's foot was still in the crease.

Wimps Need Not Apply  -- Primis        4-6-00,   4:15PM
I don't care what anyone says otherwise, Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH is simply the coolest amusement park in the world.  Nothing else even comes close.  Not only can you spend an entire day there and still not get around to doing everything you wanted to, but the price of admission is a bargain when you consider the unlimited rides and such that you get.  I've wasted many a summer day there...

This year Cedar Point has unveiled a new roller-coaster -- The Millenium Force.  Not only is it the first-ever roller coaster to breach the 300-foot mark in terms of height (310 feet), but its main hill also features a... get this... 80-degree drop, which will give it a top speed of around 92 MPH.  Yes you read that right, 92MPH.

This has unnerved even some of the most fearless coaster riders I know, and takes me back to years ago when the Magnum was first built and how imposing it was to people.

So just how tall is the main hill of the Millenium Force?  A television station called the park to say one of their downtown roof-mounted cameras could see the light on top of the main hill.  Big deal you say?  The television station was in Toledo, OH -- 45 miles away from the park.  ;-)

You bet I'm ready for summer.

Nothing Left to Say  -- Primis        4-4-00,   3:55PM
I know a lot of you are expecting some huge column on MSU's national championship victory last night but there's really only one thing left to say.  One year ago during one of the final SportSlam Postgame Shows at WCGC in Belmont, NC I told my co-host Larry Bernard that MSU would be back to the Final Four after losing to Duke in the semifinals.  Larry thought otherwise, and contended that Ohio St. was the team that would be back to the Final Four.

Well Larry, if you're out there reading this, I still have the tape of that broadcast, in which you said not only the MSU wasn't for real, but also said that Mateen Cleaves was the most overrated player in the country.

Well, now we both know the most overrated player in the country was Indiana's AJ Guyton, and... where did Ohio St. get to in the tournament?  Oh yeah, they lost in the 2nd Round.  I guess that's yet another "Oops" on your part Larry.    ;-)

I.H.L. History  -- Primis        4-1-00,   9:45AM
I had the privilege last night to witnesss International Hockey League history.

On spur-of-the-moment my brother-in-law, sister, and I decided to attend the Michigan K-Wings game last night in Kalamazoo, MI simply because none of us had been to a game yet this year.  The K-Wings were playing the Detroit Vipers so we figured it would be a semi-decent crowd and game.

Instead, 4,500 strong (The stadium only holds around 5,000 -- and 4,500 is a good crowd for second-worst team in the league playing the worst team in the Vipers) showed up to witnesss K-Wings goaltender Marty Turco break an IHL record that was set way back in 1973 for consecutive shutout minutes. The previous record was 264:02  (minutes:seconds). Turco's current record is now somewhere around 270:00 and counting, as the K-Wings shut out the Vipers 2-0. You better believe I saved my ticket stub...

One other note -- former Red Wing goaltender Kevin Hodson was in net for the Vipers (Tampa Bay's affiliate) and was a class act -- including turning around behind the goal to give his stick to a young fan (which prompted a small standing ovation from the K-Wings crowd that remembers Hodson from his stint with the Detroit Red Wings).

All in all, a historical and memorable night for a franchise that might be leaving Kalamazoo at the end of the season.
