THIS JUST IN: Garcia Still Sucks, I'm Still Right
Versus the Browns last week, Jeff Garcia managed to generate one touchdown for the Lions, running it in himself.
This week versus the Bears, Garcia managed to generate one touchdown for the offense indirectly, and in true Garcia fashion threw the game-winning INT in overtime that was returned by the Bears for a TD -- a throw Joey Harrington never would have eve tried to make because he would have known he couldn't make it.
All this from a QB throwing 34 times last week, and 35 times this week.
Behold your chosen messiah, Detroit Lions fans.
I hope his play makes you ill and you hate every minute of it because... I Told You So™.

Prìomh Pucks, Inaugural: (10-26-2005)
This is something new I'm going to try, as an outlet for my hockey-ness. I'm going to attempt to write a weekly column on nothing but the NHL. I've failed miserably in trying to write a weekly regular column, but then again I never actually wrote on anything that is quite in my wheelhouse like the NHL is.
The intention here is to seperate it from the rest of the clutter that can be this site, and also keep it out of the general Sports section on here.
I'll also probably take brief peeks at the AHL, NCAA, and International scenes as they come about.
So let's get this thing going...

Jeff Garcia: Nobody's Savior
If you haven't seen my Lions' recaps the past few weeks, it's because I didn't bother doing them. One week I was out-of-town and didn't even get to see the game, and the week after was so much of the same thing I've been saying that I didn't even bother saying it yet again.
Let's get one thing straight though -- 13-10 win over Cleveland or not, the Lions still stunk with Garcia starting today. When you pick Trent Dilfer off 3 times (and who can help but do that -- he *is* Trent Dilfer after all?) and still only come away with one Touchdown the entire game, how can that possibly be a *good* thing? Simple - it can't, and is indicative of Jeff Garcia not doing a single thing better than Harrington has done.
Now if you listened to Ron Pitts and Brian Baldinger on FOX you could have sworn Jeff Garcia was the second coming of Jesus himself. But that's only because they were busy trying to decide on drapes to match the inside of Jeff Garcia's rectum, where they've made their new home, neighbors to most of the rest of the media right now as well.
So let's end this once and for all by completely blowing up all the myths and excuses at work here...

PDA's Have Failed? Says Who?
Slashdot is currently running an item asking why PDA's have failed. It seems rather ludicrous to me, but then again it's Slashdot so of COURSE it's ludicrous and has no grounding in reality or anything.
The reality? PDA's *haven't* failed. They're just not for the unwashed masses who'd have no use for them anyhow.
The comparison of PDA's to iPods is unfair -- they are not at all competing devices and do not fill the same niche in the marketplace. iPods are little shinies for people who wants shinies, like status symbols, and can afford the pricetag. PDA's are more-expensive (about as expensive as a desktop PC), are for people who really need that organizational and computing power in the palm of their hand, and not meant for amusement.
I have a Dell Axim X5 PocketPC from work that I use (they payed for it, why not?). I never fathomed that I would find a real use for it. Much to my surprise I did -- I keep my email and calender synced on it at all times, and it has a wireless card I use to hop onto wireless access at odd times. I was surprised when it dawned on me that I was using it so much and relying on it to keep track of things. It goes in with me every morning, and hoem with me every night. And on trips, it goes with me even if I doubt I'll need it or use it (because I inevitably *do* use it). It's a freaking laptop that fits in my pocket, basically, and at 400mHz it's no slouch.
The average person doesn't need that ability though. Playing mp3's or movies... playing games... you can do all of that on a PDA but... why buy a PDA just to do that? An iPod is $150 less with more space, a PSP is at least $100 cheaper and geared specifically towards gaming...
PDA's haven't failed in the least though. I see people at work using them every day... some of them people I would never necessarily expect to use them. And it's funny -- if one person isn't using theirs we can always find someone who WILL get a lot more use out of it that wants it.
And it's absolutely silly to suggest they have "failed", when they continue to be used and developed in an era when laptops are getting smaller and even more devices are doing more things. That alone speaks for itself -- they're not going anywhere any time soon. And I suspect they'll be around long after the iPods and portable movie players have all died out, and cellphones have gone out of style. Because for those that have a real use for them, they're simply too useful.

Quite An Applet, Eh?
Your name is boring. Do yourself a favor and go get yourself a real name. As Mike Wilbon would say "A REAL MAN'S name!". And then Tony would shout at him for the next 15 minutes about the greatness of Tom Brady until his face turned blue.

RSS Feed Weirdness
Just to let everyone know a site-related note: I have no idea why the RSS feed has begun spewing older articles as new ones now. It's beyond me. I hope it won't continue on for too long, but we'll just have to see I guess.
So yeah, just ignore the old articles showing up in feeds please. Kthnxbye.

Jack Thompson: Inadvertently Proving The Opposition's Point
(AKA: Videogames May Not Make You Violent, But Lawyers Make You Stupid)
You may have heard of lawyer Jack Thompson. He's one of those guys who hopped on the anti-videogame bandwagon in order to try and make himself rich and all-powerful. Basically he's the industry version of an ambulance chaser.
You also may have heard of the fiasco he's gotten himself into with, well, EVERYONE in the gaming industry and more... but you may not know some of the details behind it all. So let's review the story of how one lawyer with no concept of what he's doing or getting himself into, can act like an 8 year-old, firmly place his foot in his mouth, and then get completely and utterly shown up by the opposition.
Or, in gamer jargon, "j00 g0t 0wn3d".

Thought on the Toledo Riots
For those of you that mised it, Toledo had riots break out after a Neo Nazi march went predictably-wrong. Accounts of the aftermath wildly vary, but anywhere from 50-100 people were arrested in total, 12-24 injured, and anywhere from 1-3 seriosuly injured and taken to the hospital. That maybe sounds tame, but business were also burned, and there was other collateral damage.
In the longview it wasn't *really* that bad I guess, however it was easily-avoidable, and emblematic of the problems that really have manifested themselves in Toledo -- and they're not quite what you maybe think.

Twice is a Trend, Third Time Needs to Be A Shooting Offense
You'll remember back on October 1st I wrote a bit on Michigan State football, and (accurately) stated that MSU's biggest fault and weak point is their coaching staff, and wondered how long it'd be before everyone else got a clue that the Spartans can have the most-talented team in the universe and still never, ever win because the coaches would find a way to screw it up.
I'm going to keep this brief as I can.
John L. Smith sucks. His offensive coordinator sucks. His defensive coordinator sucks.
They all suck. The coaching staff blew it against Notre Dame and the kids on the field still managed to pull it out for them, somehow, despite every effort by the staff to throw that game away. Today, the MSU coaching staff found ways to lose even when Peko returned a fumble for a TD late to tie it back up.
Michigan State is wasting its time with this staff.
And so, they did it again today, for the 2nd game in a row and 3rd time in 5 weeks. The kids played their guts out, and the coaches found a new and interesting way to throw the game away anyhow.
After the game, on the radio, Smith said "This one's on the coaches".
No $#@&, Sherlock? Just like every other loss anymore, you mean?

The New NHL: Officiating Problems
We knew this was going to happen. The product on-ice has indeed improved to some extent, but in the feel-good vibes of welcoming the sport back from the abyss nobody has spoken up as of yet to call out the officiating for some unsettling problems which will only magnify as the season wears on unless they're addressed.
So let's talk about them for a bit.

NHL on OLN: The Morning After
I rambled somewhat-incoherently on this very subject while games were still in progress, on a different site last night. I felt though that I probably should put together something a little more-structured and coherent today covering many of the same bases.
So here's a look at OLN and Comcast's first night of NHL hockey.

SF Mayor: "WiFi Is a Basic Right"
San Fransisco Mayor Gavin Newsome is making headlines for all the wrong reasons again.
This time around Newsome has publicly stated that free wireless is a basic, fundamental civil right.
"This is inevitable -- Wi-Fi. It is long overdue," Newsom told a news conference at San Francisco's City Hall. "It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information...
...This is a civil rights issue as much as anything else."
Wow, great mayor you have there, San Fran. Apparently wireless internet access is a basic right and should be free... but things like housing, safety, food, and childcare aren't *nearly* as important as free wifi.
No wonder San Fransisco is such a screwed-up place. Way to stick it to the lower class while giving handouts to the upper class. So much for the concept of the left wing protecting the interests of all people, not just the rich... shoot, I have to think even the most die-hard left wingers will read this, shake their heads, and wonder what Newsome's point is (aside from the fact he obviosuly likes not only himself, but also promoting himself).
I guess Newsome can join Ray Nagin in the "Mayors Who Are First-Rate Clowns" line.

Tigers Axe Tramm
The Detroit Tigers just (as in it's still very much Breaking News) fired Alan Trammell after 3 seasons managing the club.
This is depressing, because it means the Tigers front office still doesn't get it.
Tramm can't be blamed. This team, besides the injuries everyone will harp on, simply doesn't have any pitching. And that's not his fault, it's the front office's. It's Mike Illitch's and Dave Dombrowski's faults.
I really disagree with this. Firing Trammell insinuates that he could have done better with this roster. How exactly? I thought he squeezed everything he could out of them, and they just didn't have it or any luck. So how can Dombrowski possibly justify firing Trammell?
Simple, he wants Lou Pinella, and is deluded enough to think the Tigers can get him.
Yeah, good luck with that.
So, what have you done for Tigers fans lately, Dave Dombrowski? You're next on the chopping block, and you have exactly one season to make it work (and by work I mean "field a playoff-contending team next year, no excuses), or you can go stand in the unemployment line as well.
When did the Fords start running the Tigers?

LIONS WEEK 4: DET @ TB
TAMPA BAY - 17, DETROIT - 13.
TB - (4-0)
DET - (1-2)
For supposedly being such a great team, it was rather obvious today that Tampa Bay isn't one. It took a lot of luck and several bad calls their way to help beat a Lions squad whose coaches still have no idea what they're doing.

Once Is Notable, Twice Is a Trend
I'm going to keep this brief as I can.
John L. Smith sucks. His offensive coordinator sucks. His defensive coordinator sucks.
They all suck. The coaching staff blew it against Notre Dame and the kids on the field still managed to pull it out for them, somehow, despit every effort by the staff to throw that game away. Today, the MSU coaching staff found ways to lose even when Peko returned a fumble for a TD late to tie it back up.
Michigan State is wasting its time with this staff.
The kids on MSU's side did NOTHING WRONG today against Michigan, and watched the coaching staff and their miserable decision-making and playcalling throw it all away into oblivion, to be lost forever. The only costly errors made today were *all* made by the coaching staff.
Fire them all. Offensive and defensive schemes aren't worth a single thing if there's not a single coach capable of making the right (and stupidly-obvious) decision when it all counts. They got conservative when they couldn't afford to be, gambled when they had no reason in the world to, and refused to blitz and get in Henne's face when we all know they needed to do that at least a couple times every series.
John L. Smith and his staff will never, ever, EVER take this program where it needs to be. They're incapable of it. They're simply losers to the core.
Consider this year wasted. It literally doesn't matter what happens now, they didn't beat Michigan and we all know that in true MSU fashion they'll lose plenty more this year because the staff threw one away tore the kids' hearts out. 4-1.... they may as well be 0-5. I wouldn't be surprised if they even fail to make bowl-eligible status at this point. What a way to squander a year with one of the guttiest, hard-nosed, most-talented, never-say-die rosters MSU's had in along time. What a waste that such complete clowns are the ones coaching them and making the decisions.
The coaches simply are not good enough, not smart enough, and not capable enough.
Go get a REAL coaching staff. Fire these complete and utter *losers* now, and save yourself and fans some time.
-- Primis.
